MS Society Visit to Swansea University: Campus Research Day

Blogs, Research

In August, Swansea University had the pleasure of welcoming a group of dedicated fundraisers and supporters of the MS Society, led by Ceri Bevan, Fundraising Manager for MS Society Cymru. The visit offered a unique opportunity for guests to see firsthand how their contributions are helping to drive forward crucial research into multiple sclerosis (MS) at Swansea University.

The day began with a guided tour of the neuroscience research labs, led by Dr Owain Howell, Senior Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School, works closely with MS Register analyst Sarah Knowles looking into the pathology of MS. Visitors also had the chance to meet Owain’s two PhD students, Mia (pictured below left) who is supported by the MS Society, and Joic (pictured below right) who is supported by Swansea University. The students were able to share insights into their cutting-edge research and what motivates their work in this vital field.

Following the tour, Dr Rod Middleton delivered an engaging talk on the UK MS Register, demonstrating to the group what a powerful resource it is for collecting and analysing real-world data from people living with MS across the UK. Rod’s presentation highlighted how this data is transforming the way researchers and clinicians approach MS care and treatment. This would not be possible without the funding the Register receives from the MS Society.

The visit concluded with refreshments and time for informal conversation, giving guests a chance to reflect on the day and connect with researchers and fellow supporters. It was a meaningful and inspiring visit, showcasing the powerful impact of community support on MS research at Swansea University.

Sharon is a volunteer with MS Society Cymru and was part of the visiting group, she said: ‘What a privilege to visit the MS Register and MS Research teams at Swansea University. It was exciting to see first-hand the innovative research, and to meet the brilliant, dedicated people behind the science. Hearing about their incredible work was truly inspiring. They are passionate about their research which is driving progress and making a real difference for people living with MS.’

Dr Rod Middleton said: ‘It was fantastic to be able to jointly host this visit with Dr Owain Howell and colleagues. The Register represents a major tranche of research funded by the MS Society. It’s important to demonstrate to fundraisers where money for research is actually being spent.  We endeavor to make all of our research at Swansea University world class, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase this.’

The UK MS Register team hopes to host more visits like this in the future. For more on our research, you can read a list of our publications here.
